August 2022 - Sunset at The Statue of Liberty
If you have your Picture This Photography NYC calendar this is your August 2022 image "Sunset at The Statue of Liberty"
This image was captured from the fast-moving Staten Island Ferry during the final hour before sundown. The Statue of Liberty is always an impressive sight to locals & visitors alike. I lived on Staten Island for a year so took the ferry to & from work daily during dusk, dawn, sunrise, sunset, daylight & darkness so collect a whole range of daily commuting images in all weathers.
📷To capture the perfect Lady Liberty at Sunset image there are multiple factors to consider as below. As I took the ferry daily I knew exactly where I wanted the sun to be so was prepared with my camera settings for the decisive moment, If you only have one opportunity to line up the sun at the exact position it is recommend to use continuous shoot to ensure the perfect shot is captured, otherwise there is always tomorrow!
Location-The only place that gives a full-on & direct view of The Statue of Liberty is from a boat on the water. Either the Staten Island Ferry, The Circle Line, Statue City Cruises or any private boat will give this view face on.
Time of Day-The sun sets behind the State of Liberty 15-45 minutes before sunset so plan the best ferry departure time before sunset. The ferry passes in front of the Statue of Liberty 5-8 minutes into the journey so factor this into your travel time.
Camera Settings-A DSLR camera using manual settings produces the best outcome as settings can be adjusted to capture a crisp & still object from a moving boat by using a fast shutter speed.
The State of Liberty monument is positioned on Liberty Island in New York Harbour & was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States commemorating their alliances during the American Revolution It is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy & was designated as a National Monument in 1924.
Tours are available of Liberty Island & access to the crown or pedestal of The Statue however the best views, in my opinion, are always from the water. She looks amazing any time of day or night however is particularly striking during the golden hour as the sun sets behind her and the sky changes colour.
