January 2023 - Winter Daze at Brooklyn Bridge Park
If you have your Picture This Photography Calendar this is your January 2023 image “Winter Daze at Brooklyn Bridge Park.”
I love Winter in NYC: wrapping up warm, walking around empty streets aimlessly, breathing in the cold, crisp air and stopping for a hot chocolate to defrost!
Walking from SoHo to Brooklyn Bridge Park was a weekly occurrence for 2+ years rain or shine (or snow!) as my photography school was in the heart of Dumbo on Washington Street so my journey became part of my photography story and final project show.
I have seen the neighbourhood evolve and grow since then (2015-2016) and it is one of my favourite places to explore where old and new collide seamlessly while retaining a small town feeling despite overlooking a big city with the most iconic skyline in the world!
This image was captured on a rare winter day in January 2022 with nothing scheduled so I took a long walk to nowhere particular and somehow ended up at Brooklyn Bridge Park. I was drawn to this peaceful scene as due to the empty branches I was able to see across The East River to Lower Manhattan. It was a calm & serene moment in a crazy city full of people and for that moment I felt like the only person around.
I like the grey/blue colour palette of winter alongside the complementary tones of pale turquoise of Jane’s Carousel, South St Seaport Pier 17 & 40 Wall St rooftop. The railing and bare tree branches create foreground interest and a unique layer to give the view an air of mystery & secrecy.
