April 2022 - I left my heart in a cab in SoHo
If you have your Picture This Photography NYC Calendar these are your April 2022 images, collectively titled "I left my heart in a cab in SoHo"
SoHo is an acronym to note the area South of Houston (How-ston) which sits below Greenwich Village, above Tribeca and west of Nolita/Little Italy on the map where Houston is Houston Street that runs East to West to divide the neighbourhoods. There are varying reports of where SoHo ends, I recognise it as Houston (North) Canal (South) West Side Highway (West) and Lafayette (East), technically south/west also blurs into a sub neighbourhood called Hudson Sq. Tri-bec-a is the Triangle Below Canal (St) and No-li-ta is North of Little Italy; New Yorkers are always short on time so everything is abbreviated!!
Now we have cleared that up these are the picture-perfect, iconic cast-iron, Belgian block streets of SoHo in all its glory of the beautiful Prince St & Greene St, 2 of my favourites!
I lived in SoHo for 12 years, 10+ of them on Prince St so have a great affinity for this neighbourhood as I have explored & photographed it morning, noon & night in all seasons!
📷 When photographing movement you have to be committed to capturing blur or sharpness, nothing in-between. For daytime shots I prefer clean captures (unless purposely panning) so a mid-fast shutter speed of between 1/500-1/600 is sufficient for side street shots.
Image 1 - SE Corner of Prince & Greene looking east. Although this image does have a slight blur I like the complementary colour composition.
Fun Fact, the cast iron building in the background (above Tumi flags) was used as the apartment in the movie Ghost. The Apple Store is out of shot to the left and it is one of the busiest corners in SoHo!
These 2 close up images of cast iron buildings and fire escapes show Greene St looking south from Spring. I shot these early one Sunday morning stood up on the window frame of what was the American Apparel store (now Bang & Olufsen)
This final colourful cab image was shot one evening as I walked home along Prince St, I saw the sea of cabs lined up in front of my eyes and luckily grabbed my camera to capture the colourful sight (I never leave home without it)
Even though I since moved I always love strolling around the streets of SoHo no matter the weather as “I really left my heart in a Cab in SoHo.”
