If you have your Picture This Photography NYC Calendar this is your August 2024 image “Gazing over The East River”
New York City is full of iconic view everywhere you turn and this one is a classic! The concrete jungle effect is certainly in full force in this image captured from The Manhattan Bridge. For an island that is approximately 23 square miles it really does make full use of every single inch and although the street views are never-ending it is really only when viewed from a higher perspective that it really does bring a smile to the most jaded of New Yorkers!
Gazing over The East River from this perspective gives an instantly recognisable view that is equally questionable to pinpoint. It is captured from the south side walkway of The Manhattan Bridge and is an amazing walk to take from The Lower East Side to Dumbo over The East River.
The Manhattan Bridge traffic entry is via the imposing stone archway & colonnade while the pedestrian entry is from Canal St & The Bowery (be sure to choose the south side for these views as although there is a walkway & bike path on the North side also it is separated by the train tracks!) Once on the main stretch of the Bridge the views are spectacular ranging from graffiti in Chinatown to iconic Lower Manhattan view before even reaching over the river.
The Suspension Bridge is built from nickel steel with carbon steel wire cables and has 2 slender "two dimensional" steel towers with shallow stiffening trusses.Originally grey it has weathered over time to be blue & grey since it opened on 1909. It is a double-decker bridge with westbound & eastbound lanes above with additional westbound lanes and the subway below: the pedestrian walkway runs parallel to the train tracks and is quite a sight to see when strolling across it day or night.
This view is from The Brooklyn side looking west over Brooklyn Bridge Park with Jane’s Carousel, The East River and of course The Brooklyn Bridge.
Brooklyn Bridge Park is a beautiful space to take a stroll while admiring the greenery, walkways and iconic river views. Pier 1 & immediate surrounding area houses the ferry, carousel, lawn, ice cream shop, playground & The River Cafe plus the most amazing boardwalk and sunset views. Amazing to think that this renovated destination began 10 years ago and now stretches from Brooklyn Heights to Vinegar Hill.
Jane’s Carousel is a beautiful antique carousel originally built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and installed in Idora Park Youngstown OH. Purchased in 1984 at auction and in desperate need of renovation it was lovingly restored & donated to Brooklyn Bridge Park by local artists Jane and David Walentas and opened to the public on September 16 2011.
The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge across The East River between Lower Manhattan & DUMBO, Brooklyn. Opened on May 24, 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge was the first fixed crossing of the East River. it is beautiful & so photogenic whatever the weather and is commutable via walk/bike lanes in addition to driving. No train lines cross The Brooklyn Bridge.
