Stunning Sutton Place Sunrise
Sunrise over The East Side is a beautiful sight and has to be seen to be believed.
The sun rises behind The 59th Street Bridge illuminating the East River as New York City awakes. I woke up early and decided it was a great idea to walk to Sutton Place for the sunrise. As I walked along the north side of 59th Street Central Park was a hollow darkness while the south side was hive of activity. No matter where I am in Manhattan I am always amazed at how many people are constantly around so early in the morning!
I turned south on Second Avenue and paused to watch The Roosevelt Island Tram rise above the early morning traffic, marvelling at the ingenuity of the design. Second Avenue is the downtown route of choice for most New Yorkers for any method of traversing and I happily joined them before turning on to 55th Street where I walked to the end of the street overlooking The East River. Wow!
The view is spectacular and especially when floodlit in golden hues during a colourful sunrise. Directly opposite is Roosevelt Island with the ever-growing Long Island City skyline as a backdrop, to the left The 59th Street Bridge and to the right The Williamsburg Bridge downriver.
The Astoria Ferry peacefully floated by temporarily creating ripples in the glass-like calm of The East River. Roosevelt Island continued to sleep while the newly-arrived gentrified awoke slowly by rubbing their eyes in Long Island City. Be careful not to blink as you may miss another glass tower joining the LIC Skyline!
The air was calm with a morning breeze from the river and despite being surrounded by towering residential buildings I was alone with the most beautiful sunrise and nothing else mattered.
