October 2021 - Classic NYC Controversy
If you have your Picture This Photography NYC Calendar this is your October 2021 image “Classic NYC Controversy”
This image was taken from a moving boat during a Circle Line Tour. It captures the view from The Hudson River where Hudson Yards & The Vessel and The Empire State Building are visible and aligned. A split second later and this view is gone.
October is my favourite month for a number of reasons, firstly, the cooler weather feels fresh & crisp, secondly the start of the fall colours puts a bounce in my step and encourages me to venture out to explore, thirdly my birthday is during this month so I always treat myself to a an adventure. This boat trip was one such indulgence.
I love to escape New York City but never want to lose sight of it, even for a second. I find a boat trip is a great way to relax, recharge, and redefine my NYC life and get some new perspectives. A trip around the island of Manhattan is the perfect way to keep an eye on it while simultaneously escaping. Highly recommended.
Hudson Yards marketing promotes it as an upscale cultural centre of the new west side. Reality is, most New Yorkers have little time for Hudson Yards or The Vessel and it is mainly visited by tourists due to its far west location and bougie reputation. In truth it is somewhat pretentious, but worth a visit once just to see or far best viewed from the water in my opinion. Nevertheless the controversial Vessel does make for a photographic moment to compare with the statuesque and classy Empire State Building and is a very current realism of old vs new New York City.
Never one to look for conformity I like the viewpoint of this image including the light, colour and shapes contained within in. To me this is “Classic NYC Controversy”
