Early mornings are my favourite time of day, particularly before the sun rises & as the day starts to awaken: the stillness in the air, the unbelievable colour palette and the anticipation of the day ahead.
I lived on Staten Island for a year and the best part of my day was taking the morning ferry across to Whitehall. It wasn't so great waking up at 5am daily and having to be on a ridiculous-hour ferry but this view made it worth every lost minute of sleep.
The different ferry boats have distinctive layouts; this is my favourite the John F Kennedy. I like the rounded shape and the openness at the bow, the width of the outdoor windows for framing and that it is a "smaller" ferry with a nostalgic feel & look.
At certain times the ferry would catch the perfect colour palette before the glaring sun rose, this was one of those mornings for me. The smokey atmospheric look gives it an enchanted feeling of charmed beginnings in a magical world: how very apt as NYC approaches larger than life before stepping off the voyage into a new reality.
